Home-based Learning (24/1/2011)

Home-based Learning for LA: 2 Comic strips stories with a message of a theme from short story narrative elements.

First Comic Strip:

Racial Discrimination

This Comic Strip's message/theme is Racial Discrimination.
I chose this background to give a slight emphasis on what the situation is ( people looking for employment, mostly white with two "unskilled" blacks. The people were unemployed and looking for jobs and the place is a job centre, where those people signed up to try and get a job. The man at the bottom left hand corner of the first panel of the comic strip, wearing the grey jacket is the boss of the centre, and also the employer. He welcomes the men and starts to select those worthy of getting his jobs. He accepts most of them, except for the only two "unskilled blacks". He discriminates them as they are unskilled and black, and does not accept them, even though they need the job and are willing to work for their pay. The black men appear smaller then the rest, seemingly inferior. They talk softer, seemingly afraid of the boss and nervous about their chances, knowing that they would mostly likely fail. The black men also talk with slightly inaccurate grammar due to their social status and being uneducated ( unskilled ) . The black men's dressing also show that they are less wealthy than the others, being unable to purchase classier attire. The simple background is to emphasize that the personality of the boss, (also proven by the way he speaks to the black men) .

Comic Strip:

Racial Prejudice

This Comic Strip's message/theme is Racial Prejudice.
I chose this background to show that the Chinese boys are secretive and cowardly, whispering inside a locker room so that no one can hear them. It is also a break in their soccer session, which is why their allowed to enter the locker room. They are racist against an Indian boy who happens to be the new kid on the block. They insult him with nasty comments, totally unknown to the Indian boy. However, when they're soccer session resume, they are shocked motionless that the Indian boy, the new kid on the block, is actually their new soccer captain! After being introduced to each other, the pair of Chinese boys are embarrassed of what they did and start to learn their lesson and respect the indian boy for who he is.
